The song of the Nibelungs
Reading medieval literature may seem hard at first, but once you started, you would be completely absorbed in it. So, why should you read exactly The Nibelungenlied? We will try to answer.
It is a story about battles and fights, courtship and marriage, hatred and revenge and of course love. A dynamic poem full of fascinating plot twists. Isn’t it exciting to read about a strong, brave, almost invincible man ready to do anything to get the girl he loves? We all like love stories, don’t we? Even if you don’t, you might be attracted with numerous challenges the main hero has to go through. Moreover, you’ll see a character, a heroine, to be more precise, whose power will surprise you as she can fight as furiously as men. Another heroine will surprise you with her complete change in character.
After reading the poem you may enjoy watching and listening to «The Ring of the Nibelung», a cycle of four German-language epic music dramas composed by Richard Wagner. No need to mention that it is famous throughout the world and, having read the source of inspiration of German composer, you’ truly enjoy it.
Not all of us love watching music dramas, but at least we all love watching films. There are two films close to the text. One of them was made by "Fritz" Lang in 1924, the second film is a remake of the first one. It was made by Harald Reinl and was released in two parts in 1966 and 1967.
But before you dart off to read The Nibelunglied, we advise you to read Poetic Edda as it has a lot of references to the poem.
